Capacity Under Real Load

How does the base station perform when 30 UEs are active simultaneously — with mixed traffic profiles (video streaming, VoIP, IoT telemetry, web browsing)? Vendor specs list peak capacity. Independent testing measures usable capacity.

Interoperability Gaps

Does the base station work correctly with the operator’s existing core network? With specific UE chipsets in the market? With the operator’s network management system? Standards compliance doesn’t guarantee seamless integration.

Edge-Case Behavior

What happens when the base station is overloaded? When a UE misbehaves? When backhaul degrades? When power cycles unexpectedly? Robust products handle edge cases gracefully. Others don’t — and you won’t know which until you test.

Building an Objective Evaluation Framework

Step 1: Define Test Scenarios That Match Your Deployment

Don’t test what the vendor suggests. Test what your network will actually experience:

  • UE density matching your target deployment (enterprise, rural, venue)
  • Traffic mix reflecting your subscriber base
  • RF conditions simulating your target environment (indoor, outdoor, cell edge)

Step 2: Use Vendor-Neutral Test Equipment

  • Multi-UE capability (minimum 8, ideally 32+)
